When we first played the instrumental of "Never Anymore" to Magnus, he took out his smart phone and started writing text messages. Kind of rude, we thought, but ok, he´s one of these kids, who have to be online all the time. Maybe the song just didn´t hit him right..
When the playback stopped, he got up, reached for the headphones and placed himself in front of the vocal mic. It turned out that he had just put down the lyrics to the song and we recorded it right away.
This scene took place in the fall of 2018 in Tuscany/Italy, where we first met Magnus Chapple, a young vocalist from London/UK who, like us was part of the artist in residence programme of the reknown hide away called Villa Lena.
The whole process of composing and recording a song - it normally takes weeks, months even - done in one day. Magnus´ voice blends perfectly with the instrumentation of the song:
"Never Anymore" features a Hohner Guitaret - a rare and bizarre mix of a blues harp and a guitar in the shape of a melodica -, vintage analogue synths and an electric drill creating a feedback when held close to the spring reverb. A distinctive electronic drum groove syncopates around the heavy four to the floor bassline. All this combined with the dark timbre of Chapple´s voice creates a mystic, melancholy vibe that will warm your soul like a good cup of tea in a cold November night...
